The Intriguing and Vibrant Hue of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo

Seven Fifty Daily asked Dallas sommelier and wine director of Tower Club of Dallas’ Tiffany Tobey about the charming and approachable nature of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, the cherry-hued sister of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Through short maceration of these wines, the high pigmentation of the Montepulciano skins gives these wines their deeper pink color, making them a wonderful entry point for even the most skeptical of red wine drinkers curious about the world of rose.

One of Tobey’s selections which highlights the wine’s drinkability is Masciarelli ‘Villa Gemma’ Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo describing it as, “so vibrant and full of fruit and acidity—one that you can chill and drink by the pool or bring to the dinner table.” With its versatility in cuisine pairing and ability to be served warm or chilled, Tobey encourages that this wine is a great introduction to the Montepulciano grape in a lighter style wine. Perhaps the finest rosé production area in Italy, and one of the few appellations dedicated only to rosé, Cerasuolo has a long history of producing serious rosé, and showcasing how well the Montepulciano grape is adapted to rosé. Masciarelli first produced this wine in 1986, only 5 years after the winery was founded. With deep fruit and structure but no shortage of pleasure, it is a rosé you can take to the dinner table.
